Slime Sweets and Dungeon Treats: A Cozy Book Review

What do you get when a baker and a whole lot of slimes decide to open a café in the middle of a dungeon? A story that is exactly as cozy and chaotic a read as it sounds. It follows a young woman named Hazel, who wakes up to find herself in a different world than her own. To get back to her life, she has to defeat the dungeon that she has found herself thrown into. But she chooses an unorthodox approach when she selects a grilled cheese for a weapon, becomes the dungeon’s first-ever Culinary Mage, and befriends the slimes she is supposed to defeat!

Life in the dungeon is constantly challenging Hazel, but along the way, she meets the greatest of friends, gains the most incredible abilities, and shows how staying true to yourself can make all the difference. She believes that she can change this experience not only for herself but for her friends and all of the other adventurers who are working to beat this dungeon. And did I mention there are the cutest of slime friends, a garden that practically grows itself, fire-breathing chickens, and a very bored dungeon core?

Reading this book felt like I had stepped into the dungeon myself. Pierce does a wonderful job describing the characters and the world. She transported me straight into Hazel’s café, where I could smell the baked treats and imagine I was balancing Matcha on my head while I enjoyed a cup of tea. And I am still thinking about how I wish there was a recipe for Hazel’s cookies, because they must have been amazing given that they were used more than once to save the day.

Fellow wanderers, you are going to want a warm cup of tea, your coziest of blankets, and maybe your own plate of chocolate chip cookies while you read this one. I, for one, cannot wait to pick up even more of Pierce’s books and am even more excited to share them with you as we wander through the Rustling Thistle shelves together.

I wonder what world we will escape into next?

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
